Vellum Wedding Invitations: Beautiful Ways to Use Vellum in Your Invitation Suite

Some of our favorite wedding invitation details are the ones that don't necessarily need to be there—but completely change the way a suite feels.
Vellum is one of them.
Soft, translucent and incredibly versatile, vellum adds another layer to wedding stationery without making an invitation suite feel heavy or overdone. It can be romantic and delicate, modern and minimal, or dramatic and moody depending on how it's used.
At White Lace Design, we love incorporating vellum into invitation suites in unexpected ways. From full vellum jackets to delicate wraps and printed overlays, there are so many possibilities.
What Is Vellum?
Vellum is a smooth, translucent paper that allows the colors and design underneath it to softly show through.
Unlike traditional cardstock, vellum isn't completely opaque. That transparency is exactly what makes it such a beautiful layering material for wedding invitations.
Place it over typography, artwork or a photograph and the design underneath becomes softened. Wrap it around an invitation and it adds texture while still giving guests a glimpse of what's inside.
It's a small detail that can make a simple invitation feel much more dimensional.

Vellum Jackets for Wedding Invitations
A vellum jacket wraps around the invitation like a translucent cover, creating a beautiful first layer for guests to open.
This is one of our favorite ways to use vellum because it adds an experience to the invitation without hiding the design underneath.
Vellum jackets can be left completely clear and simple, or they can become part of the design themselves.
We especially love pairing them with wax seals, ribbon or a coordinating belly band to hold everything together.

Printed Vellum Jackets
And this is where vellum can become so much more than a translucent layer.
Artwork can be printed directly onto a vellum jacket, turning the jacket itself into an important part of the invitation design. Because vellum is translucent, the invitation underneath softly shows through the artwork, creating depth and dimension that you simply don't get from traditional cardstock.
At White Lace Design, we've created printed vellum jackets using everything from delicate botanical illustrations and tropical palms to full-color watercolor landscapes, venue-inspired artwork and bold patterns.
For a destination wedding, palm trees or coastal artwork can immediately set the scene. A mountain wedding might feature a watercolor landscape that wraps across the front of the invitation. Botanical line drawings can create something romantic and timeless, while an unexpected pattern can give the entire suite a completely different personality.
The artwork itself can also be customized through color. The same design can take on an entirely different look when printed in soft blush, dusty blue, sage green, navy, white or another shade chosen to coordinate with the wedding palette.
Finish the jacket with a wax seal, ribbon or another coordinating detail, and the vellum becomes more than packaging—it becomes part of the invitation itself.

Vellum Belly Bands and Wraps
You don't have to cover the entire invitation to get the effect of vellum.
A vellum belly band wraps around the center of an invitation suite, keeping the pieces together while adding a soft translucent layer.
These can be kept simple or personalized with the couple's names, initials, wedding date or monogram.
They're also beautiful paired with wax seals.
For couples who love layered stationery but don't want a full vellum jacket, this is one of our favorite alternatives.

Vellum Overlays
Another gorgeous option is placing a single sheet of vellum directly over the invitation.
This works especially well when there's something underneath that deserves a little reveal.
A photograph, watercolor venue illustration, floral artwork or bold typography can peek through the translucent layer before the vellum is lifted.
The vellum itself can also carry part of the design—perhaps the couple's names or a simple phrase—while the remaining wedding details are printed underneath.
It creates an invitation that guests interact with rather than simply read.
Vellum Can Soften a Moody Invitation Suite
This might be one of the reasons we love vellum so much at White Lace Design.
We aren't afraid of dark colors.
Black, chocolate brown, burgundy, deep green and other rich tones can make incredible wedding invitations, but adding a translucent vellum element brings softness and balance to those deeper colors.
Pair a dark invitation with a vellum jacket, ivory details card and velvet ribbon, for example, and suddenly the suite feels romantic rather than overly dark.
That contrast is beautiful.

What Can You Pair With Vellum?
Vellum plays very nicely with other invitation details—which is probably why we keep finding excuses to use it.
Some of our favorite pairings include:
Wax seals
Silk or chiffon ribbon
Velvet ribbon
Envelope liners
Dark or colored cardstock
Venue illustrations
Botanical artwork
Monograms
Layered invitation cards
Deckled or specialty-shaped cards
The trick isn't to use every embellishment at once. Instead, choose a few elements that work together and let each one have its moment.
Vellum doesn't have to be delicate or traditional, either. Printed patterns can completely change the personality of a suite—from romantic florals and watercolor landscapes to tropical palms or even a bold cowhide print.

Is Vellum Right for Your Wedding Invitations?
If you love invitations with layers, texture and thoughtful little details, vellum is definitely worth considering.
It can make a simple invitation feel more special without completely changing the design, or it can become one of the main visual elements of the entire suite.
And because there are so many different ways to use it, vellum works with everything from romantic garden weddings and coastal celebrations to modern black-tie and moody destination weddings.
